Some history
Marie Brignole-Sale, duchesse de Galliera

Built in the 19th century, the museum was funded by the Duchess of Galliera, who inherited a fortune after her husband’s death in 1876.

In 1879, she donated land in the 16th arrondissement to the City of Paris and financed the construction of a museum to house her art collection.

The building’s Italian Renaissance-style façade was inspired by a palace the Duchess owned in Genoa.

Over the years, the museum was mostly used for temporary exhibitions.

In 1977, it officially became the Fashion Museum of the City of Paris, home to one of the richest fashion collections in the world, with over 100,000 garments and accessories dating from the 18th century to today.

Until recently, the museum was open only during temporary exhibitions (2 to 3 times a year) and closed in between.

a new era

Thanks to support from Chanel company, the museum underwent a major renovation starting in 2019.

Since 2021, the museum now offers both:

  • Permanent exhibitions in the basement, showcasing the history of fashion from the 18th century to today.
  • Temporary exhibitions on the ground floor.

There is also now a bookshop and a café on-site.

Behind the museum is Square Galliera, a charming garden created in the 19th century.

Its entrance is on Avenue du Président Wilson, across from the Palais de Tokyo. The fountain in front of the museum dates back to 1916.

2017 highlight: dalida exhibition

In 2017, the musseum hed a special exhibition dedicated to the wardrobe of Dalida, the iconic French-Italian singer and actress.

Her  brother donated many of her outfits, stage costumes, and personal items to the museum.

If you’re not familiar with her, Dalida was a superstar in France during the 1970s and 1980s, and remains a beloved cultural figure.
