LIST n°2

  1. Take a bus when you’re in Paris, not only the Metro; It’s one of the good way to experience Paris and to be with locals and a way too to avoid the stairs in the metro (no lift in the metro, with some exceptions)
  2. Paris is a rather small city that allows you to walk from one area to another
  3. Meals: generally speaking avoid the center of tourist areas to have a meal : you may pay more for very average food
  4. Pedestrian crossings: in Paris, almost no one will stop if you step on a pedestrian crossing.Be very careful before crossing a street. Including bicycles as bike can be on the side while the cars and other bicycles go the opposite direction. Not to mention that on a pedestrian crossing, when there is no traffic light cars most often don’t stop for pedestrians (although they should…)
  5. Bathroom: when you need to go to the bathroom, going to a café and having a drink at the counter (or at a table) is one of the best way. This is what I do although Paris hasover 400 Sanisettes (self-washing toilets the city, available 24/24
  6. Cafés/retaurants: the level of cleanliness of the toilets is a good indication of the good running and quality of a cafe or restaurant
  7. Paris at night: yes you can stroll Paris at night : most places are safe especially in the central arrondissements
  8. Hot drinks: in a Paris café, you might not find the exact hot drink you have at home and that you expect. For instance, you will hardly find a latte in Paris cafés (this isn’t a drink Parisians ask for) except maybe in touristic spots or in a coffe shop (including in Starbuck)
  9. Paris on Instagram: this is not because of place is mentioned and photographed on Instagram that it’s the best place to go to
  10. Public transportation apps: get an app to get around Paris. I usually use : Moovit, (despite the ads) but sometimes I use the RATP official (the app of the Paris public transportation) or The three are on my mobile. I use them more especially when I want to take the bus (knowing which line which change, , the arrival time of the next bus, the travel time..)
  11. Escalators: stand on the right on the escalators
  12. Bicycles: watch out for bikes coming in the opposite direction
  13. Water: ask for a carafe of water (instead of a bottle of mineral water which you’ll have to pay for). This is free
  14. Worst metro station: Avoid if you can, Chatelet metro station : huge, a real labyrinths with 17 exits… Easy to get lost. I still happen to get lost…
  15. Drinkable water: the Wallace fountains offer drinkable water. Don’t hesitate to fill up your bottle when you see one. There are around 100 Wallace fountains in Paris
  16. Booking in advance: be sure to book museum entrances ahead of time and try to be there when they first open » »
  17. Prices: when you go to a café, it is often the setting and where it’s located that you pay for as well as the drink
  18. In a café, you might be surprised how close you sit to the other guests
  19. Tables set up early: in some cafés, before noon, they set up the tables on the terraces which means you can no longer sit down for just a drink
  20. Selling bottle of water or any good and items in the street is not allowed (Only the street markets are allowed. And on the 1er of May, everyone can sell lily of the valley)
