Good to know :
- During the Summer months, It doesn’t get dark until 10.30/11 pm
- In Paris, we don’t choose to have takeaway drinks so often. You won’t often see people having a coffee in the street.
- The Saint-Ouen flea market with its 1100 antique dealers and second-hand dealers is the largest market of this type in the world
- Prison: do you know that there is still a prison à Paris ? In the 14th arrondissement
- The Bir Hakeim bridge, because of the privileged view of the Eiffel Tower is one of the favorite shooting photo spots. Alike the Pont Alexandre 3 and the Place du Trocadéro; But there are many others !
- Lions are everywhere in Paris : The lion is the most featured animal in Paris (sculptures, casts, on facades, in gardens, above doors, knockers…)
- Seagulls: there are lots of seagulls and gulls in Paris
- Flowers: the flowers you will most often see in planters hanging on balconies or in courtyards are geraniums. The flowers. The plants that should not be offered in France are geraniums which are plants reserved for decorating cemeteries.
- Paris’motto: the Motto of Paris is “Fluctuact nec Mergitur” ((“[She] is tossed [by the waves], but does not sink”)
- The Eiffel tower sparkles every evening after dusk for 5 minutes at the beginning of each hour until 11PM. The lights switch off at 11.45pm.
- Taking photos: do you know that taking photos of the Eiffel Tower at night or inside a shop or in the metro is not allowed (that doesn’t mean that one doest do it including myself, although not in small shops !)
- Smoking is allowed at cafes terraces (and you won’t be able to do anything about that…) It’s banned inside cafés restaurants and public buildings
- Inspired by London: the urban planning of the city of Paris decided by Napoleon III, thought out and carried out by Haussmann was inspired by the city of London, notably by its parks.
- Drinkable water: the Wallace fountains offer drinkable water. Don’t hesitate to fill up your bottle when you see one. There are around 100 of Wallace fountains in Paris
- Lanvin: Today it’s the oldest ongoing French fashion house
- The worst metro line and metro station : this is the metro line n° 13 (according to Parisians including myself). Too often overcrowded at peak times. Châtelet-Les Halles is the world’s largest underground station (more than 17 entrances/exits). If you can, avoid it. Not a nice station and I still get kind of lost in this station… !
- T-shirts : Although “Petit Bateau” is an iconic childhood brand since 1893, if you are a woman, you can get Petit Bateau T-shirts (great quality). Numerous “Petit Bateau” stores in Paris.
