The former church

A little History :

  • It’s the only remain of the former church of Saint-Jacques-de-la-Boucherie. It was the the church of   the neighborhood merchants and the location for pilgrims too. It’s located on the road which led to the destination of Santiago de Compostela.
  • The Saint Jacques tower was built in the early 16th century. It was once the bell tower of the church of Saint-Jacques-de-la-Boucherie.
  • The church grew thanks to donations from guilds and private individuals.  It was called  “Saint-Jacques-de-la-Boucherie”, because of the contribution of the guild of the butchers to its transformations. Nicolas Flamel, as an individual, contributed to the expansion of the church too. He was a writer, scholar and generous man. He was thought to be an alchemist.
  • The church was destroyed in 1793,  during the French Revolution, but the bell tower was preserved.
  • After the Revolution, the church became national property
  • The city of Paris bought the tower in 1836.
  • Then during Napoleon III era, the tower was restorated   : replacement of the damaged sculptures and ornamentations.
  • A public square was also made around the tower. It was the first one created by the  Haussmann administration in Paris. Paris wanted to have green spaces as in London
  • The tower is classified as a Historical Monument since 1862 (a national Historic landmark)
  • After remaining abandonned  for years, it became a location for scientific study.
  • In 1996, The public garden was restored
  • In 2006, the major restoration of the tower started.
  • In 2013, the tower was opened to the public

Blaise Pascal

Scientific studies :

  • During the 17th century, Blaise Pascal made use of the  Church tower for his experiments on atmospheric pressure. A statue of Blaise Pascal is located at the base of the tower, commemorating the experiments on atmospheric pressure.
