(3/17/2019) – La Samaritaine (Art Deco-Art Nouveau) : reopening June 2020

La Samaritaine is an iconic listed historic monument in a mix of Art Deco and Art Nouveau style, located Paris 1st arrondissement (nearby the river Seine).   Founded in 1870  during the second Empire, it was a wonderful huge department store during decades (composed of several blocks of buildings). It has a very special place in the heart of Parisians (not only in my heart… !).

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It closed in 2005. reason given : safety reasons … Now owned by LVMH group…. (a French multinational luxury goods, headquartered in Paris).  https://www.lvmh.com/group/. It’s currently under renovation. The project started about 2 years and a half ago. Several activities will be grouped within the buildings : a 5-star hotel, offices, a crèche. It seems that they are preserving (at least partly…) the unique architecture of the façades and  the wonderful staircase and the décor inside should be renovated as it was before.

La Samaritaine has a very special place in my heart.. It was without doubt the place where my grand mother most loved to go in Paris. And this is where she used to take me before Christmas to enjoy the wonderful window displays and the toy department. La Samaritaine will reopen… Yes this is fine but I am glad and sad at the same time… La Samaritaine : 19 rue de la Monnaie – Paris 1 – France

(3/15/2019) – “It’s very French” ( = “c’est très français”) : A new and fun French ad

I must say that I don’t especially appreciate the advertisings (on the contrary, it often drives me crazy… !) but in my opinion, this one is special and I thought that posting it with the text that goes with it,  would be fun and that you may enjoy it !

(The main character : in blue)

(3/12/2019) – La Pagode is going to come back to life !

La Pagode, a must, is going to come back to life !! Of all the movie theaters in Paris, La Pagode least resembles a cinema. A gem out of time. A cosy and magic atmosphere. But unfortunatly a few years ago,  it has had to close and this made many Parisians and visitors very sad… (!) I remember with nostalgia, the time I spent in this beautiful place.2019-03-10 - la pagode cinema paris - Recherche Google

But…. and this is a great news, it has just been saved by Charles Cohen, an New Yorker (a lawyer) cinema-lover who made his fortune in real estate.   Thank you Mr Cohen !This iconic and wonderful cinema, called La Pagode is located in the 7th arrondissement of d offered asParis  (rue de Babylone, straight down the street from Le Bon Marché. ) is going to be renovated and should reopen within 3 years. It will include 4 movie theaters (instead of the previous 3), with 451 seats. I am looking forward this reopening !

La Pagode was an old independent cinema where it was like going back in time.2019-03-12 - La Pagode cinéma 1

It was built in 1895 in a Japenese style by the very rich director of Le Bon Marché ana gift to his  wife. Unfortunatly, she left him a year later. La Pagode was first used as a dance hall and for receptions  then, converted in 1931 into a cinema specialized in showing independent movies. It was movies you couldn’t see anywhere else (Igmar Bergman, Cocteau, F Truffaut, E Rohmer …). There was a wonderful tea room too in a tiny Japenese garden. Hope the renovation will include a tea room as well ! Don’t miss it when you come

But the price is so high that I don’t even dare to tell you the price… !!  If you wish to visit the place, note that it’s not the most beautiful surrounding you’ll find in Paris and around….
